## Synopsis

American Nightmare (2024) is a British true crime docuseries miniseries produced for Netflix, with a three-episode run that suits a single sitting. It follows a couple whose account of a violent home invasion and kidnapping in 2015 is met with suspicion when the woman reappears and the couple finds itself haunted by a new round of cruelty. Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins appear as themselves, and their interviews and archival material drive the story forward, with each episode peeling back another layer of doubt about who is telling the truth. The engine of the series is the question of credibility: what the couple says happened, what the police and public believed, and how a disputed abduction can consume two lives. Each episode pushes the case further, and the tension comes from contested testimony rather than staged action. The tone is unsettling, intimate and ruthlessly skeptical, with a sense of dread running beneath the calm of the interviews. Set in California in and after 2015, the series is grounded in real events and documentary realism. Fans of The Staircase, The Jinx and Making a Murderer will find resonance in its patient, interview-led unraveling of a case that refuses easy answers.
