Critics and audiences find Ludwig an eccentric, clever puzzle-driven crime drama with a strong central performance from David Mitchell, though many feel it is less funny than its comedic pedigree suggests.

## Synopsis

Ludwig (2024-2026) is a British crime mystery series created by Mark Brotherhood for BBC One. David Mitchell stars as John Taylor, a reclusive puzzle designer who works under the pen name Ludwig and who, when his identical twin James vanishes, steps into his brother's life to find out what happened. Anna Maxwell Martin plays Lucy Betts-Taylor, and Dipo Ola plays DI Russell Carter, the police detective whose investigation sits alongside John's own covert hunt. Across two seasons of twelve episodes in total, the show runs as a continuing story in which each case unfolds through clues, misdirection and red herrings, with a case-of-the-week texture folded into the search for the missing man. The engine is simple and tense: John must keep his disguise intact while closing in on the truth, and every lie he tells risks exposing him. Set in present-day Cambridge, the series has a cosy crime register, wry and gentle in its comedy yet still uneasy about the disappearance at its heart. Its appeal is the pleasure of watching a clever mind work through a puzzle, in the spirit of Monk and Sherlock, with the quirky, identity-driven intrigue of The Prestige for those who enjoy a twisty premise.
