## Synopsis

Soviet Jeans (2024) is a Latvian national-television dramedy miniseries created by Staņislavs Tokalovs and Juris Kursietis for Go3. Set in the late 1970s Soviet Latvia, it follows Renārs (Karlis Arnolds Avots), an ardent rock and roll fan who sets up a successful and illegal underground jeans factory inside a psychiatric hospital. Renārs and his small circle, including Tina (Aamu Milonoff) and Māris (Igors Šelegovskis), must keep their operation hidden from staff and watchful officials while meeting a growing demand for Western-style denim across the country. Each episode is built from the practical tangles of smuggling fabric, bribing orderlies, and dodging informants, all shadowed by the constant threat of exposure. The eight-episode limited series blends wry comedy with a melancholic undercurrent about youthful defiance under an oppressive state. Its tone is breezy yet quietly tense, with a nostalgic period texture of rock records and forbidden fashion. Fans of Chernobyl, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Narcos will find resonance in its mix of institutional absurdity, illicit ambition and historical grit.
