## Synopsis

Whitechapel (2009-2013) is a British television crime drama series created by Ben Court and Caroline Ip for ITV1. Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler, played by Rupert Penry-Jones, leads a murder squad through London's East End, where copycat killers keep re-enacting the notorious crimes of Jack the Ripper. Steve Pemberton plays Edward Buchan, Phil Davis plays Ray Miles, and Claire Rushbrook plays Dr Caroline Llewellyn, and their working relationships give the investigations their texture. The engine of each story is the hunt itself: the detectives chase leads through cramped streets, dim pubs and grim crime scenes, racing to identify the next victim before the copycat strikes again. The series ran four seasons and eighteen episodes, mostly built around a single case per episode with some season-long threads. Its shape is closer to a police procedural than a serialized saga, though recurring characters and the Ripper echo carry across the run. The tone is dark, tense and atmospheric, with a damp, washed-out London look and an undercurrent of dread about the past repeating itself. Fans of Ripper Street, Luther and The Fall will find resonance in its moody London setting and its methodical, character-driven investigations.
