## Synopsis

Skärgårdsdoktorn (1997-2000) is a Swedish national-television family medical drama created by Lars Bill Lundholm and Gunilla Linn Persson for SVT1. Samuel Fröler plays Johan Steen, a doctor who returns to Sweden after years of work in Somalia and takes over his father-in-law's medical practice in the archipelago. Ebba Hultkvist Stragne plays his daughter Wilma, and the two try to build a new life together on an island community where patients arrive with everyday ailments, long-standing grudges and personal troubles. Sten Ljunggren, Helena Brodin and Göran Engman fill out the surrounding cast of neighbors and colleagues who share the small island world. The show runs three seasons of six episodes each, eighteen episodes in total, and is structured as a continuing character drama rather than a case-of-the-week format. Its engine is the tension between Johan's restless past and his wish for a quiet, ordinary life by the water. Set in the late 1990s Swedish archipelago, the series has a gentle, reflective register, with long stretches of coastal scenery, modest domestic moments and a steady undertow of loss and reconciliation. Fans of Doc Martin, Doctor Finlay and Northern Exposure will find a similar pleasure in small community medicine and an outsider finding his place.
