## Synopsis

Amsterdam Empire (2025) is a Belgian and Dutch crime drama series created by Bart Uytdenhouwen, Nico Moolenaar and Piet Matthys for Netflix. Famke Janssen plays Betty Jonkers, a wife whose husband's affair comes to light, and Jacob Derwig plays Jack van Doorn, the businessman who has built The Jackal, his coffeeshop empire. Betty hatches a bitter plan to strip Jack of the thing he loves most, and the engine of the story is a battle of wills between a betrayed spouse and a man whose pride and livelihood are tied up in his business. Jack's family, including Elise Schaap as Marjolein Hofman and Jesse Mensah as Patrick van Doorn, is pulled into the fallout, so the drama plays out across domestic rooms and the shadowy commerce of the city. The series runs seven episodes in a single season, a tightly plotted serialized arc in which each episode tightens the screws. Its tone is sharp, sardonic and tense, with a gritty, morally compromised atmosphere that recalls prestige crime television. Fans of Ozark, Peaky Blinders and Succession will find resonance in its family power struggles and its ruthless business ambitions, set in a contemporary Amsterdam of canal-side bars and back-room deals.
