## Synopsis

The Big O (1999-2003) is a Japanese animated science fiction series created by Sunrise and produced by Bandai Visual for WOWOW Prime and TOKYO MX. Its protagonist, the negotiator Roger Smith (voiced by Mitsuru Miyamoto), works in Paradigm City, a walled metropolis whose residents had their memories erased decades earlier under a powerful corporation. Smith pilots a giant robot called the Big O and takes on cases that dig into the city's buried past. Alongside him, the android butler R. Dorothy Wayneright (voiced by Akiko Yajima) and the enigmatic Angel (voiced by Emi Shinohara) help him pull at loose threads. The series is a single 26-episode season built around a serialized mystery in which each case reveals more about the forgotten history beneath the city. Its mood is melancholic and noir-tinged, with a retro-futuristic look, a heavy atmosphere of paranoia and existential unease, and a slow-burn pace. Fans of Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell will find resonance in its blend of detective storytelling, mecha spectacle and philosophical questioning.
