## Synopsis

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (1980) is a Soviet television film miniseries produced by Central Television USSR and Lenfilm, adapted from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. Vasiliy Livanov plays the brilliant consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, while Vitali Solomin is his steady companion Dr. Watson, with Rina Zelyonaya as Mrs. Hudson anchoring the Baker Street household. The two-part story draws on The Speckled Band and A Study in Scarlet, following the pair as they chase a sinister family secret and then a murder marked by a bloody inscription. Holmes's engine is observation: he reads small details, questions witnesses and Scotland Yard inspectors such as Lestrade and Gregson, and pieces together motive from the past. The episodes are unhurried and dialogue-rich, with a restrained, atmospheric register of foggy Victorian streets, candlelit interiors, and quiet menace. Its tone is measured and faithful to the literary source, with a steady melancholy beneath the puzzle. Fans of Sherlock, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Brett's Sherlock Holmes will find resonance in its devotion to deduction and period atmosphere. It is a two-episode limited run of roughly sixty-eight minutes per part.
