## Synopsis

The Secret of the River (2024) is a Mexican drama miniseries created by Alberto Barrera Tyszka for Netflix. Across eight episodes of roughly forty-three minutes each, it follows Erik (played as a child by Mauro Guzman and as an adult by Diego Calva) after he arrives in a small Mexican village, where he forms a profound friendship with a local kid, Manuel (Frida Sofía Cruz Salinas). Their bond blossoms in the quiet rhythms of village life, but a dark secret binds the two boys together and threatens to shape everything that follows. The engine of the story is the slow pressure of that secret: what the boys owe each other, what they can never say aloud, and how the community around them notices more than it admits. Each episode lingers on small, intimate moments, with the adult storyline and the childhood past moving in counterpoint. The series is a single, continuing story rather than a case-of-the-week format, and its tone is melancholic, tender, and foreboding. Fans of Roma and Heartstopper will find resonance in its intimate Latin American perspective, its attention to childhood longing, and its unhurried, emotionally honest treatment of identity and loyalty.
