## Synopsis

Shameless (2004-2013) is a British dark comedy-drama created by Paul Abbott for Channel 4. Set on a rough Manchester council estate, it follows the Gallagher siblings, abandoned by their parents and surviving on wits, scams and humor. Eldest sibling Fiona Gallagher (Rebecca Ryan's role is Debbie; Fiona is portrayed within the ensemble) anchors the household while the feckless father Frank Gallagher, played by David Threlfall, drifts through drinking and schemes. Middle class lad Steve falls for Fiona and is gradually pulled into this unconventional family, while the exceptionally bright fifteen year old Carl Gallagher, played by Elliott Tittensor, struggles to come of age amid belligerent and closeted family members and neighbours including Karen Maguire (Rebecca Atkinson) and Mimi Tutton (Tina Malone). The engine of the show is daily improvisation: each episode is built from petty scams, neighbourhood feuds and sudden crises that the children must solve with little adult help. Across eleven seasons and 138 episodes it runs as one continuing, serialized saga with a frank, raucous and warm register. Its gritty northern English realism and anarchic humor invite comparison with Roseanne and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and fans of working class British comedy-drama will find resonance in its blend of grime and affection.
