## Synopsis

Campion (1989-1990) is a British cosy crime series created by Margery Allingham for BBC One, adapting her Albert Campion mystery novels across two series of four two-part stories each. Peter Davison plays the urbane amateur sleuth Albert Campion, whose languid manner hides a sharp mind, while Brian Glover plays his blunt, devoted manservant Magersfontein Lugg, whose gruff loyalty supplies much of the comic friction. Andrew Burt appears as Stanislaus Oates, the policeman friend who grudgingly shares the investigations. Each story drops the pair into a fresh puzzle, typically a death in a country house or a respectable community, with a large cast of suspicious gentlemen, guests and servants to sort through before the solution is laid out. The engine is the pleasure of the puzzle itself rather than danger or spectacle. The tone is witty, gentle and nostalgic, with a polished period feel that recalls interwar English manners. Fans of Father Brown, Lord Peter Wimsey and Miss Marple will find the same mix of civility, wordplay and tidy whodunit resolution. The run is short and complete, a two-season limited adaptation that stays faithful to its source.
