Critics and audiences broadly regard the miniseries as a faithful, acclaimed adaptation of le Carré's novel, carried by Alec Guinness's restrained portrayal of George Smiley.

## Synopsis

Smiley's People (1982) is a British espionage miniseries created by John le Carré for BBC Two, adapted from his own novel. Alec Guinness plays George Smiley, a retired intelligence officer pulled back into the Circus after a dead friend's last days raise questions no one in the service wants to answer. Working alone against political indifference, Smiley follows a trail of clues that leads toward a high-ranking figure in the Russian secret service and a secret important enough to kill for. Eileen Atkins plays Madame Ostrakova, a Soviet émigré whose buried past becomes central to the hunt, while Bill Paterson and Bernard Hepton fill out the ranks of the Circus and its contacts. The six-episode limited series unfolds through patient interviews, quiet confrontations, and careful reconstruction in drab offices, safe houses, and wintry European cities. Its tone is measured, weary, and intellectually melancholic, with a cold war paranoia that comes through in conversation rather than gunfire. Fans of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Night Manager, and Deutschland 83 will find the same patient, morally grey espionage here.
