## Synopsis

The Jeffersons (1975-1985) is an American network sitcom created by Norman Lear and Michael Ross for CBS, a spin-off of All in the Family. Isabel Sanford plays Louise Jefferson and Sherman Hemsley plays her outspoken husband George, a successful businessman who never lets his working-class roots go unmentioned. After years in Queens they move on up to a ritzy Manhattan apartment, where their upscale building brings new neighbors, a white interracial couple played by Roxie Roker and Franklin Cover, and a steady stream of pretentious rivals. Each episode is a multi-camera comedy built from marital bickering, mistaken assumptions, and George's clashes with doormen, neighbors and social climbers. The show runs for eleven seasons and roughly 248 episodes, a long, consistent network run that fans of All in the Family, Good Times and The Honeymooners will recognize. Its tone is warm and cheerful, with a proud, lively sense of Black middle class life in New York City, and its jokes mostly land through character rather than cynicism, making it an easy, comforting watch.
