## Synopsis

Ramayan (1987-1988) is an Indian Hindu mythological epic series created, written and directed by Ramanand Sagar for DD National. Adapted from Valmiki's Ramayan and Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas, the single-season run of 78 episodes follows the righteous Prince Ram, played by Arun Govil, as he accepts exile alongside his devoted brother Laxman, played by Sunil Lahri, and faces the trials of the forest. Their central quest is to rescue Sita, portrayed by Deepika Chikhalia, from the ten-headed demon king Ravan, played by Arvind Trivedi, while the devoted Hanuman, played by Dara Singh, leaps across the stage of the story to aid them. Each weekly episode is built from vows, court intrigue, sacred oaths, divine intervention and set-piece battles staged with costumed gods and demons. Set in the ancient mythic world of Treta Yuga India, the series carries a devotional, sincere and reverent register, where dharma and loyalty are foregrounds rather than twists. Its gentle, stately pacing and heartfelt sentiment made it a Sunday ritual for families across the country, and fans of Mahabharat and classic epic adaptations will find its grandeur and moral seriousness familiar.
