## Synopsis

Jazz (2001) is a PBS documentary docuseries created for public television by Ken Burns and produced with Florentine Films, WETA and BBC. Presented across ten long-form episodes of roughly two hours each, it follows the evolution of America's original art form through the musicians who could create music on the spot. Narrator Keith David guides viewers through archival footage of performers including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Dave Brubeck and Art Tatum, whose recorded performances carry much of the storytelling. Rather than a single plot, the series builds its shape chronologically, moving through decades of innovation, rivalry and reinvention while placing each style in the social context of the country that gave it birth and was transformed by it. The tone is warm, reverent and celebratory, with a contemplative pace that rewards patient listening. Its emphasis on improvisation, artistry and the interplay between music and national history makes it a natural fit for fans of Ken Burns documentaries such as The Blues and The Civil War, and for viewers drawn to music history in the vein of Muscle Shoals. Viewers looking for a rich, immersive education in American music will find it deeply rewarding.
