## Synopsis

Fortysomething (2003) is a British comedy miniseries created for STV, a single six-episode run of roughly forty-nine minutes each. Hugh Laurie stars as Paul Slippery, a middle-aged doctor in Putney whose life of family pressure and midlife frustration takes an odd turn when he suddenly begins to hear other people's thoughts. Anna Chancellor plays his wife Estelle, while Benedict Cumberbatch appears as their son Rory, and Peter Capaldi plays a colleague, Dr. Ronnie Pilfrey, whose workplace dealings add friction. The engine of the show is the gap between what Paul hears and what he can safely say, as he juggles children, a household, and a medical practice while his unwanted gift exposes every polite lie around him. Each episode is built from small domestic embarrassments that escalate into farce. Its tone is wry, warm, and slightly anxious, with a dry British sensibility that favors awkward pauses over slapstick. Fans of Peep Show and Ghosts will find a similar pleasure in sharp observational humor about ordinary adult life, and the miniseries offers a compact, easy comedy for an evening.
