## Synopsis

Sindbad the Sailor (1975-1976) is a Japanese animated family adventure series produced by Nippon Animation with ZDF as a co-producer, airing on Fuji TV. Its impish young hero Sindbad (voiced by Noriko Ohara) sneaks away from the royal palace of ancient Baghdad after dreaming of the wider world, boarding the ship of his uncle Captain Ali (voiced by Akira Kamiya) with a clever myna bird named Sheila at his side. The engine of the show is curiosity and the pull of the open sea: each episode drops the crew onto a new island, kingdom or magical realm, where they meet strange creatures, spirits, mermaids and sorcerers and must find their way out of trouble. Sindbad's rival Baruba and the crew's scrapes give the voyages a playful edge. Set in a folkloric Arabian Nights world drawn from fairy tale, the series is built from self-contained stories across one season of fifty-two half-hour episodes. Its tone is buoyant and wondrous, with a warm, gentle heart and a sense of adventure that will appeal to fans of Aladdin, Ulysses 31 and Adventure Time. Gentle, sunlit and full of marvels, it suits young viewers and families looking for classic animated voyages.
