## Synopsis

Unknown Chaplin (1983) is a British documentary miniseries produced for ITV1 by Thames Television, running three episodes of roughly fifty-two minutes each. Rather than retracing the life story of its subject, it takes apart the working methods of Charlie Chaplin, the silent film comedian who also directed, wrote, and scored his own pictures. Its engine is the filmmaking process itself: how gags were blocked, rehearsed, shot, and reshot until the timing landed. The series is built around previously unseen footage drawn from Chaplin's private film archive, including outtakes in which he and his collaborators, among them Edna Purviance, Albert Austin, and Georgia Hale, appear as themselves, and narration from Alistair Cooke guides viewers through the material. Each episode feels like a quiet look behind a closed studio door, with an intimate, curious, and admiring tone. The result is a rewarding study of silent cinema craft for viewers who enjoy behind the scenes film history, in the vein of The Celluloid Closet and Visions of Light.
