## Synopsis

The Great Queen Seondeok (2009) is a Korean historical drama series created for MBC, a sixty-two-episode run of sweeping palace intrigue set in the ancient Silla kingdom. Its heroine, the exiled princess Deokman (Lee Yo-won), grew up in a distant desert unaware of her royal heritage until she returns disguised as a man to join an elite order of warriors. Her closest allies include the scheming nobleman Bidam (Kim Nam-gil) and the warrior Kim Yushin (Uhm Tae-woong), who stand beside her as she pursues her identity and tries to overturn a corrupt rival faction threatening the throne. The engine of the series is a woman forced to hide her true self while outwitting court rivals, with each episode built from sword fights, shifting alliances, and political maneuvering inside royal halls. Its tone blends sweeping period grandeur with romance and suspense, offering a dense, emotionally charged portrait of power and identity. Fans of Jewel in the Palace, Empress Ki and Dae Jang Geum will find resonance in its court politics, its strong female lead, and its long-form Korean period storytelling.
