## Synopsis

Miss King (2025) is a Japanese television drama series that premiered on ABEMA SPECIAL and runs for a single eight-episode season of roughly 35 minutes each. Its protagonist Asuka Kunimi, played by Non, is the daughter of a genius shogi player whose father abandoned the family and whose mother has died, and she channels that pain into becoming an elite competitor in the shogi world. Seigo Todo (Naohito Fujiki), Reiko Sakai (Kana Kurashina) and Shoichi Yuki (Shidou Nakamura) orbit her climb, and the principal cast also includes Kaoru Okunuki, Shoot Mori, Yui Narumi, Tokuma Nishioka and Sayaka Yamaguchi. The engine of the story is a young woman's hunger to prove herself against a field of seasoned players, with each episode built around tense matches where personal grievances surface across the board. The format is a continuous, contained arc rather than a case-of-the-week structure. Set in contemporary Japan, it unfolds in the quiet, pressured rooms of competitive shogi, where every move carries weight. Its tone is intense and restrained, with suspense and revenge sitting under a surface of discipline. Viewers who enjoyed the obsessive ambition of The Queen's Gambit or the competitive fervor of Hikaru no Go will find resonance here, along with the character-driven grit of Better Call Saul.
