## Synopsis

One Outs (2008-2009) is a Japanese animated sports drama series created by Shinobu Kaitani for Nippon TV, produced with Madhouse. Hiromichi Kojima (voiced by Tsutomu Isobe), the star batter of the Lycaons, travels to the southern island of Okinawa to recruit a new pitcher and meets Toa Tokuchi (voiced by Masato Hagiwara), a fast-throwing pitcher who is the undisputed king of a gambling form of baseball. Their deal is unusual: Tokuchi earns money for every out he records but loses far more for every run he allows, so each at-bat becomes a wager of nerve and logic. Supporting figures such as Nakane (voiced by Wataru Takagi) and Satoshi Ideguchi (voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi) add pressure from teammates and rivals. The engine of the series is the tactical battle inside every pitch, with a narrator guiding viewers through the calculations behind each play. Its twenty-five episodes make up a single continuing story rather than a case-of-the-week format, and the tone is cerebral, tense and gritty with flashes of dark humor. Fans of Kaiji, Liar Game and Ace of Diamond will find resonance in its blend of gambling psychology and competitive sport.
