## Synopsis

Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play (1995-1996) is a Japanese animated shoujo fantasy series produced by Pierrot and broadcast on TV Tokyo and affiliated stations. Miaka Yuki, a junior high school student in modern Tokyo, is ordinary in every way until she and her best friend Yui Hongo (Yumi Touma) discover a mysterious book in the library and are pulled inside it into an ancient Chinese-inspired realm. There Miaka must gather the celestial warriors bound to the stars so she can make a wish to the sovereign, and her journey is complicated by her attraction to rival warriors, especially the fiery Tamahome (Hikaru Midorikawa) and the wandering Tasuki (Nobutoshi Canna). Chichiri (Tomokazu Seki) and the imperial figure Hotohori (Takehito Koyasu) add further pull to the romantic tangle. Each episode mixes battles, political maneuvering and everyday camaraderie. The 52-episode run is a single continuous quest, with a wistful, romantic and adventurous tone and a sense of destiny. Fans of Inuyasha, Sailor Moon and Escaflowne will find resonance in its blend of teen emotion and fantasy.
