## Synopsis

Batman (1966-1968) is an American camp superhero series created by William Dozier and Lorenzo Semple Jr. for ABC. Wealthy entrepreneur Bruce Wayne (Adam West) and his ward Dick Grayson (Burt Ward) secretly become the crime fighting duo Batman and Robin, racing from the Batcave to emergencies in the Batmobile as Police Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton) calls in the latest threat to Gotham City. The engine of each episode is a rotating gallery of master criminals, including The Riddler, The Joker, Catwoman and The Penguin, whose schemes the heroes must foil using gadgets from the utility belt and the Batpole. Across three seasons and 120 episodes, the show runs on cliffhangers that resolve at the start of the next instalment, giving it a brisk, cheerful, self-aware rhythm. Its bright palette, exaggerated villains and earnest deadpan delivery create a sixties pop register that is playful rather than dark. Set in a stylized version of Gotham City, the series takes the comic book superhero and plays it with theatrical irreverence. Fans of Adam West Batman tie-ins, Power Rangers and The Greatest American Hero will find a similar kinship in its campy, family-friendly fun.
