## What critics say

Critics and viewers broadly agree that the series is a funny, warm and character-driven northern club comedy, carried by Peter Kay's performances and its absurd set pieces.

## Synopsis

Early Doors follows the regulars and staff of a small, unglamorous Bolton pub across opening time after opening time. Largely set in the bar before the doors open, it watches a rotating cast of barflies, a harried landlord and a handful of loyal drinkers trade petty grievances, half-formed schemes and rambling philosophy while the clock ticks towards last orders. Nothing dramatic is ever meant to happen, and that is the point: the comedy lives in long pauses, overheard arguments, and the gap between what characters claim and what they quietly hope for. The tone is warm, wry and frequently bleak in a cheerful way, with an affectionate eye for working class routine, loneliness, and the small rituals that hold a community together. Dialogue is naturalistic and improvised-feeling, with sharp timing and occasional flashes of absurdity. Viewers come for character rather than plot, for the pleasure of spending half an hour in a familiar corner of northern England, and for the bittersweet sense that these people, for all their failings, belong to one another.
