## Synopsis

George and Mildred (1976-1979) is a British sitcom created by Brian Cooke and Johnnie Mortimer for ITV1, a spin-off of Man About the House. Brian Murphy plays George Roper, a grumpy, miserly husband, and Yootha Joyce plays his frustrated wife Mildred, whose patience wears thin as the couple adapt to life on an up-market housing estate. Their neighbors, the younger and more affluent Fourmiles, played by Norman Eshley and Sheila Fearn, provide the social pressure and rivalry that fuels much of the comedy, with Nicholas Bond-Owen as their son. The engine of each episode is simple: George tries to maintain his cheap habits and grudges while Mildred tries to enjoy a better life, and the friction between them plays out in cutting exchanges and escalating small domestic disasters. Across five seasons of short half-hour episodes, the show keeps a single domestic setting and a steady rhythm of sharp dialogue, comfortable and affectionate in tone despite its acid barbs. Fans of Till Death Us Do Part, Steptoe and Son and The Good Life will find the same sparring couple and class-conscious British humor, and the show remains a warm, nostalgic watch for anyone who enjoys classic domestic comedy.
