## Synopsis

The Avengers (1961-1969) is a British television spy series created by Sydney Newman for ITV1. Patrick Macnee plays the urbane, proper gentleman agent John Steed, who teams with a changing set of capable partners, among them Ian Hendry as Dr. David Keel, Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale, Diana Rigg as Emma Peel and Linda Thorson as Tara King. Across six seasons and roughly 160 standalone episodes, the engine is simple and playful: Steed and his partner investigate an eccentric scheme and stop a diabolical evil-doer before the week is out. The stories are case-of-the-week adventures rather than one continuing arc, and they range from strange plots to outlandish robots and man-eating monsters. Set in swinging sixties Britain, the show carries a breezy, camp, whimsical register, with a fashionable sense of style and dry wit. Fans of Danger Man and The Prisoner, along with the playful absurdity of Get Smart, will find a similar appetite for stylish espionage.
