Praised as a sharp, awkward character comedy carried by Steve Coogan's lead performance, though its short run keeps it a cult favourite rather than a mainstream hit.

## Synopsis

Saxondale (2006-2007) is a British comedy series created by Steve Coogan for BBC Two. Steve Coogan plays Tommy Saxondale, an ex-roadie with anger management issues who runs a pest-control business and believes the world owes him far more respect than it gives. His live-in assistant Raymond (Rasmus Hardiker) occupies a spare room in Tommy's house, his live-in girlfriend Magz (Ruth Jones) runs a T-shirt business, and his receptionist Vicky (Morwenna Banks) regularly tests his patience. The engine of each half-hour episode is Tommy's wounded pride colliding with mundane suburban jobs, petty household squabbles and clients who fail to show him deference. The show runs for two seasons and thirteen episodes in a single continuing run, with a deadpan, awkward tone that mixes irritation with affection. Set in a 1970s-rooted English suburb, it lingers on the faded rock-and-roll swagger of a middle-aged man who never quite left his youth behind. Fans of The Office, Alan Partridge and Early Doors will find resonance in its cringe humour and portrait of a flawed, self-deluding everyman.
