## Synopsis

How the West Was Won (1977-1979) is an American western family drama broadcast on ABC across three seasons and twenty-eight hour-long episodes. James Arness plays Zeb Macahan, the Virginia patriarch who leads his household westward to pioneer a new land and build a new home. Bruce Boxleitner plays his son Luke, Fionnula Flanagan plays Molly Culhane, and Kathryn Holcomb plays Laura Macahan, all woven into the travelling clan. The engine of the show is the hard daily work of the journey: crossing rough country, settling claims, and meeting the hardships and strangers that a moving family must face. Each episode carries its own trials while the larger push west gives the saga a continuing shape. Set in the nineteenth-century American frontier, the series reads as a traditional, earnest family adventure with a wholesome, hopeful register and a steady rhythm of rugged landscapes. Viewers who enjoy Little House on the Prairie and The Big Valley will find the same warmth, sweeping scale, and pioneer resolve here.
