## Synopsis

Prime Suspect (1991-2006) is a British police procedural series created for ITV1 and produced by Granada Television. Helen Mirren stars as Detective Inspector Jane Tennison, a highly skilled officer battling to prove herself in a London police force dominated by men. Across seven seasons of feature length episodes, Tennison pursues brutal murder cases through forensic evidence, interrogation rooms and tense departmental politics, while colleagues such as Bill Otley (Tom Bell) and Frank Burkin (Craig Fairbrass) test her authority at every turn. The engine of each story is the gap between her rigorous investigative instinct and the resistance of an institution that doubts her. The show unfolds as a serialized run of self contained investigations with a continuing character arc, offering a bleak, sober and intelligent view of contemporary London. Its tone is gritty and unsentimental, with flashes of dark humour and personal cost. Fans of Cracker, The Killing and Life on Mars will find resonance in its blend of procedural realism, flawed detectives and social commentary on gender in the police.
