## Synopsis

Snuff Box (2006) is a British surreal dark comedy sketch series created by Rich Fulcher for BBC Three. Matt Berry plays the High Executioner to the King of England, a boisterous hangman whose assistant is played by co-creator Rich Fulcher. Their days revolve around a gentleman's club for hangmen, where the two rivals spend their free time competing for women, money and a shred of happiness, with each episode built from a string of crude, absurd escapades. Terry Wade and Alan Ford round out the regular cast, and a parade of one-off guest players fill out the brief run of six half-hour episodes. The engine of the show is the characters' appetite for pleasure in a world of execution and grim public ritual, which gives the comedy a jagged, gleeful edge. The tone is bawdy, deadpan and surreal, with a dark streak of depravity that sits alongside cheerful silliness. Its anachronistic English setting is a loose, invented historical England rather than a documented era. Fans of The Mighty Boosh, The Fast Show and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace will find resonance in its cult sensibility and grotesque, self-aware humour.
