## Synopsis

Sapphire & Steel (1979-1982) is a British science-fiction fantasy series created by Peter J. Hammond for ITV1, produced by ATV. David McCallum plays the enigmatic agent Steel and Joanna Lumley plays his partner Sapphire, two operatives from beyond normal reality who are sent to contain irregularities that breach the boundaries of time and space. David Collings appears as Silver in several stories. Each of the six serials is a self-contained case across thirty-four episodes, with the pair arriving in ordinary places such as railway stations, country houses and rural villages where the fabric of time has begun to fray. Ordinary people become trapped in repeating moments or drawn into dimensions where familiar rules no longer hold, and the agents must pinpoint the source of the rupture before it spreads. The engine of each story is methodical investigation under mounting menace, with Sapphire and Steel's dry, measured exchanges anchoring the strangeness. The series has a 1970s British television sensibility, with slow, deliberate pacing, minimalist sets and an atmosphere of quiet dread. Its tone is cerebral and eerie rather than action-driven. Fans of Doctor Who, Twin Peaks and Dark will find resonance in its mix of temporal puzzle-solving and uncanny unease.
