## Synopsis

Cybill (1995-1998) is an American network sitcom created by Chuck Lorre for CBS. Cybill Shepherd stars as Cybill Sheridan, a twice-divorced single mother of two and a struggling actress in her forties who has never caught her big break. Christine Baranski plays her sharp-tongued friend Maryann Thorpe, and Alicia Witt and Alan Rosenberg play her children's household around her, giving the show its domestic core. The engine of each half-hour is Cybill's stubborn vanity colliding with her unpaid bills, auditions that go nowhere and the men she keeps reconsidering. Episodes move through apartment kitchens, restaurant meals and cramped Los Angeles audition rooms, with the comedy built on quick verbal sparring and candid self-deprecation. Across four seasons and roughly eighty-seven episodes, the show remains a case-of-the-week sitcom with recurring characters rather than a continuous plot. Its tone is breezy and wry, warm underneath its cynicism about Hollywood and midlife. Fans of Murphy Brown, Absolutely Fabulous and Roseanne will find a similar mix of sardonic female lead and family comedy.
