## Synopsis

The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2006) is a British sketch comedy series created by Catherine Tate and Derren Litten for BBC Two. Comedy performer Catherine Tate plays nearly all of the recurring characters herself, from sulky teenagers to offensive nans and the most tactless women in the world, and each thirty-minute episode is a run of self-contained sketches rather than a continuing story. Supporting players Niky Wardley, Lee Ross, Mathew Horne and Angela McHale appear across the sketches, often as the foils against which Tate's characters blunder through awkward social situations. The three seasons of six episodes each give the show a brisk, anthology-like shape, with every sketch setting up a character, a situation and a quick escalation into discomfort and laughter. The register is irreverent and breezy, with an edge of cringe comedy that relies on the sharp, unembarrassed voice of each persona. Fans of Little Britain, The Fast Show and Smack the Pony will find the same blend of character-driven British humour, broad performance and rapid-fire sketch rhythm. The show is a compact, funny showcase of one actor's range across a wide gallery of memorable comic creations.
