## Synopsis

Elvira's Movie Macabre (1981-1986) is an American horror host series created by Cassandra Peterson and broadcast on KHJ-TV. Cassandra Peterson stars as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, a gothic pinup hostess who introduces low budget scary movies from the vaults of cheap genre cinema. Each episode is built around her presenting a film and delivering sarcastic, campy commentary that undercuts the stiff thrills on screen while never dropping her glamorous, voluptuous charm. The engine is simple and playful: a cheap horror feature runs, and Elvira's wisecracks, asides and theatrical persona turn it into shared entertainment. Across five seasons and some 140 episodes, the format stays consistent, a single host, a rotating stock of creaky films and a loose, affectionate sense of fun. The tone is campy, wry and nostalgic, with a fondness for the odd charm of old b movies. Fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Svengoolie will find resonance in its late night riffing and cult horror affection, and the show offers an easy, comforting way to enjoy schlocky classics from the vault.
