## Synopsis

Jeopardy! (1984-2026) is an American syndicated quiz show created by Merv Griffin and distributed through syndication. Three contestants stand behind lecterns and select categories from a board, then respond to general knowledge clues written as answers, phrasing each response in the form of a question. Host Alex Trebek presided over the show for decades, and later seasons were hosted by Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings, with Johnny Gilbert providing the announcer voice that anchors the broadcast. The engine of each half-hour episode is a rapid cycle of category choices, daily doubles and wagering, where the contestant with the most money at the end wins. Over forty seasons and thousands of episodes the format has changed very little, which gives it a reassuring, familiar rhythm for families and trivia lovers. The tone is brisk, playful and quietly competitive, with flashes of wit in the clue writing and a warm, unhurried studio atmosphere. Its shape is an open-ended daily run rather than a story, and it is set in the present-day American broadcast studio. Fans of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Countdown and Pointless will find a similar pleasure in testing knowledge against the clock.
