## Synopsis

Pointless (2009-present) is a British national-television general knowledge quiz show produced for BBC One and BBC Two, hosted by presenter Alexander Armstrong with assistants including Richard Osman and a rotating roster of guest assistants such as Lauren Laverne, Alex Brooker and Stephen Mangan. Its engine is inverted: pairs of contestants try to score as few points as possible by finding answers that no one else in the studio thinks of, so a round is won by digging up the most obscure, least guessable knowledge rather than the most common answers. Each episode is a single round-based game in which the team builds a jackpot of points across questions, with the outcome decided by a final head-to-head test. The show runs as an open-ended daily-style run of thirty-six seasons and nearly two thousand episodes, a format built for short, repeatable sessions rather than a continuing story. The tone is light, witty and sardonic, with the presenter and assistants trading playful banter and the studio atmosphere warm and brisk. Fans of Only Connect, Mastermind and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire will find a similar appetite for trivia, though Pointless turns that appetite upside down.
