## Synopsis

Gullah Gullah Island (1994-1999) is an American children's educational television series created by Maria Magdalena Perez, Kathleen Minton Catapano and Kit Laybourne for Nickelodeon. Ron Alston (Ron Daise) and Natalie Alston (Natalie Daise) live on an island off the coast of South Carolina with their three children, James (James Edward Coleman II), Vanessa (Vanessa Baden Kelly) and Simeon (Simeon Daise), along with their niece Shaina (Shaina M. Freeman). Each episode is built from everyday moments on the island, such as cooking, games, songs and small household projects, that become simple lessons about getting along with others and about the traditions of the Gullah community. A giant tadpole named Binyah Binyah Poliiwog joins the fun as a whimsical companion. The show spans four seasons and seventy-seven episodes, with each half hour functioning as a self-contained adventure rather than a continuing story. Its tone is warm, sunny and participatory, inviting young viewers to sing, clap and join in. Set in a present-day coastal Southern community, it is a gentle preschool series in the spirit of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Blue's Clues and Bluey, suited to families who want heritage and play in the same half hour.
