## Synopsis

Jewel in the Palace (2003-2004) is a South Korean historical drama series created by Kim Young-hyun for MBC. Lee Young-ae plays Seo Jang-geum, an orphaned girl who rises from palace kitchen servant to become the first female physician in the Joseon Dynasty royal court. Ji Jin-hee plays Min Jeong-ho, and Im Ho plays King Jungjong, while Lee Se-eun and Jo Kyeong-hwan appear among the courtiers whose true faces gradually emerge. Across a single 54-episode season of one-hour installments, the engine is her determination to master medicine and cooking despite a rigid, male-dominated hierarchy and the schemes that surround her. Each episode weaves court rivalries, medical cases, and banquet preparations into a continuing story where order matters. Set in sixteenth-century Joseon Korea, the series unfolds in palace halls, kitchens, and sickrooms with a measured, contemplative tone. Its atmosphere is warm yet anxious, carrying themes of loyalty, merit, and quiet perseverance. Fans of Empress Ki and Mr. Sunshine will find resonance in its blend of period grandeur and character-driven political drama, the kind of prestige Korean historical series that defined a generation of k-drama viewing.
