## Synopsis

Oz (1997-2003) is an American HBO prison drama series created by Tom Fontana for HBO. Set inside Emerald City, an experimental unit of the fictional Oswald Maximum Security Prison, the show follows the daily lives of inmates whose survival depends on their ingroups. Tobias Beecher (Lee Tergesen) is a newcomer caught between rival factions, while Augustus Hill (Harold Perrineau) narrates the unit's brutal rhythms directly to the viewer. Kareem Said (Eamonn Walker), Vernon Schillinger (J.K. Simmons), and Sister Peter Marie Reimondo (Rita Moreno) drive the power struggles that shape each season. The engine is simple and relentless: inmates want safety, status, and revenge, while the prison administration, guards, and rival gangs keep pushing them toward violence. Each season is a serialized story told across a six-season run, with episodes that unfold like a continuing saga rather than isolated cases. The tone is harsh, unsparing, and darkly human, with flashes of tenderness amid betrayal and abuse of power. Its theme of institutional dehumanization and racial division sets it apart in the premium cable landscape. Fans of The Wire, The Shield, and Prison Break will find resonance in its gritty ensemble realism and moral complexity.
