## Synopsis

Lights Out (2011) is an American television boxing drama series created by Justin Zackham for FX. Holt McCallany plays Patrick 'Lights' Leary, a New Jersey native and former heavyweight champion who is considering a return to the ring. Stacy Keach plays his aging father Pops, while Pablo Schreiber plays his brother Johnny and Catherine McCormack plays Theresa Leary, whose lives are tangled up in his career. Bill Irwin and Reg E. Cathey add supporting weight as figures around the gym and the fight world. The engine of the series is simple and physical: a battered fighter wants one more shot at glory, and everything between him and the ring, from debts and bruised relationships to the hard economics of prizefighting, stands in his way. Each episode moves through training sessions, managers' negotiations, family dinners and bouts that carry real physical cost. Told as a single season of thirteen hour-long episodes, the show was cut short by its network, leaving its central comeback unfinished. Its tone is gritty, grounded and melancholic, with a working-class atmosphere of smoky gyms and blue-collar streets. Fans of Friday Night Lights, Rocky Balboa and Warrior will find resonance in its portrait of sport as family inheritance and a second chance.
