## Synopsis

War and Peace (2007) is a French, Italian and Russian co-produced historical miniseries created by Leo Tolstoy, Enrico Medioli, Gavin Scott and Lorenzo Favella, broadcast on La Une. Across four episodes it adapts the classic novel's ensemble, tracing the love story of young Countess Natasha Rostova (Clémence Poésy) and Count Pierre Bezukhov (Alexander Beyer) as their lives are pulled into the war against Napoleon's invading army. Alongside them, Alessio Boni plays Andrej Bolkonski, whose path crosses theirs amid the shifting fortunes of noble families. The engine is the tension between personal longing and the upheaval of invasion, with episodes built around balls, estates, letters and battlefield dislocation. Set in early nineteenth century Russia during the 1812 campaign, it is a lush period drama with a melancholic, sweeping register. Fans of the 1966 Soviet War and Peace, Napoleon and Pride and Prejudice will find resonance in its blend of romance, class and the wider drama of history.
