## Synopsis

Romeo's Blue Skies (1995) is a Japanese animated family drama created for Fuji TV and produced by Nippon Animation as part of the world masterpiece theater tradition, adapted from a children's book. Its protagonist Romeo, a poor boy from a Swiss village, bravely sells himself into servitude as a chimney sweep to rescue his family and sets off toward Milan. Along the way he meets the mysterious Alfredo, and the two become fast friends. Voice cast includes Ai Orikasa as Romeo and Toshiko Fujita as Alfredo, with Akemi Okamura as Bianca, Maria Kawamura as Angeletta, and Masahiro Anzai as Marcello Rossi rounding out the principal characters. Each episode follows the hard, sometimes dangerous work of chimney sweeping, the grind of cold streets and cramped rooftops, and the new friends who help the boys reach for a better life. The single season of thirty-three episodes unfolds as one continuing journey through nineteenth century European towns. The tone is earnest and warm, with wistful hope woven through hardship, and the emotional register stays gentle and sincere. Fans of Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Nils Holgersson will find resonance in its wholesome friendship, perseverance, and gentle travel adventure.
