## Synopsis

Surface (2005-2006) is an American science fiction drama series created by Josh Pate and Jonas Pate for NBC. Marine biologist Laura Daughtery (Lake Bell) leads a mismatched group that includes insurance salesman Rich Connelly (Jay R. Ferguson) and a teenage boy, Miles Barnett (Carter Jenkins), whose lives are upended when a new and often dangerous sea life species begins to emerge from the ocean. Their engine is simple and urgent: they want to understand what is happening beneath the waves while the government works to keep the affair under wraps, and every step they take risks exposure or danger. The single season of fifteen episodes of roughly forty-three minutes each builds a serialized mystery around investigation, close calls and the slow erosion of ordinary routines. Set in present-day America, mostly along coastal communities, the show carries an eerie, suspenseful tone tinged with wonder and unease. It is a tense creature thriller with a grounded human core, the kind of series fans of Fringe, Primeval and Eureka will find familiar. Its single season ended before the larger mystery was resolved, which gives the story an open and unfinished feel.
