## Synopsis

Strawberry Panic (2006) is a Japanese animated romance series produced by Madhouse and aired on TV Osaka, Chiba TV and TV Aichi, adapted from a novel. Across a single season of 26 twenty-four-minute episodes, new transfer student Nagisa Aoi arrives at St. Miator, one of three prestigious all-girls Catholic schools on Astraea Hill, and is immediately smitten with Shizuma Hanazono, the school's most idolized girl. Her roommate Tamao Suzumi (voiced by Ai Shimizu) becomes a close and complicated presence as Nagisa navigates the school's ritualized hierarchy of admirers, rivals and devoted pairs. The engine of the show is the tension between a newcomer's longing and the rules of a cloistered institution where affection is public, watched and fraught. Episodes are built around dormitory life, classroom rivalries and the quiet escalations of crushes inside a closed community. The mood is dreamy, wistful and intimate, with soft melancholy under its gentle surfaces. Set in a contemporary Japanese girls' school with a Catholic-school aesthetic, it is a single-season yuri romance with an episodic-yet-continuing arc. Fans of Maria Watches Over Us, Revolutionary Girl Utena and Simoun will find resonance in its cloistered devotion and idealized schoolgirl world.
