## Synopsis

Penoza (2010-2017) is a Dutch crime drama series created by Diederik Van Rooijen for NPO 3 and NPO 1. Monic Hendrickx plays Carmen van Walraven-de Rue, the daughter of a notorious Amsterdam drug lord, who reluctantly steps into the family smuggling business to clear her husband's debts. Thomas Acda plays Frans van Walraven, the family patriarch whose criminal legacy drives the household, while Sigrid ten Napel, Stijn Taverne and Niels Gomperts portray the van Walraven children caught in the fallout. Loek Peters and Raymond Thiry round out the principal criminal circle. The engine of the series is Carmen's struggle to balance maternal duty with the dangerous demands of the drug trade, with each season built around deals, rival crews and the constant threat of police and betrayal. Spanning five seasons and forty-eight episodes, it is a serialized crime saga where one continuing story unfolds across ten-episode arcs. Set in present-day Amsterdam, it carries the gritty, tense atmosphere of a national broadcaster's prestige crime series, with a brooding, morally grey tone. Viewers who enjoy Breaking Bad, Gomorra and The Sopranos will find resonance in its portrait of a criminal family and the costs of loyalty.
