## Synopsis

Exile (2011) is a British psychological thriller miniseries created by Paul Abbott and Daniel Brocklehurst for BBC One. Across three hour-long episodes, London journalist Tom Ronstadt, played by John Simm, comes home to a Lancashire town after eighteen years away and finds his father Sam, played by Jim Broadbent, lost to Alzheimer's disease. Tom's want is simple and corrosive: he needs the truth about the childhood event that drove him out, but every conversation with his confused father becomes a frustrating dead end. His mother Nancy, played by Olivia Colman, and a cast of townspeople hold fragments of the past, while Tom's own earlier mistakes press in on him. The series is built as a slow unraveling in which each scene peels back another layer of family history and reveals a crime far larger than he expected. Its mood is tense, melancholic and claustrophobic, with the grey northern English setting amplifying a sense of dread and moral unease. Fans of Broadchurch, Twin Peaks and The Night Manager will find resonance in its British prestige craft, buried secrets and flawed protagonist. The writing and performances are the main draw, making this a compact, absorbing watch for viewers who like mystery built on character.
