## Synopsis

The Great White Tower (2003-2004) is a Japanese prestige medical drama series created by Toyoko Yamasaki for Fuji TV, adapted from a novel. Its story follows two surgeons with opposing goals who are forced to work together in a city university hospital. Goro Zaizen (Toshiaki Karasawa) is ruthlessly ambitious, chasing fame and institutional power, while Shuji Satomi (Yosuke Eguchi) is driven by a conviction to save human lives. Their uneasy partnership becomes a battleground where career advancement, faction loyalty and patient welfare collide. Each stretch of the story builds around clinical decisions, misdiagnosis disputes, and the lawsuits that follow when medical mistakes surface, so the stakes feel concrete and personal. Supporting characters including Keiko Hanamori (Hitomi Kuroki) and Saeko Azuma (Akiko Yada) widen the web of loyalties and romantic entanglements inside the hospital hierarchy. The series spans a single season of 21 hour-long episodes, a patient, serialized build rather than a case-of-the-week format. Tone is sober, intense and morally weighted, with a bleak undercurrent of institutional corruption and a sense of how power bends medicine. Fans of House M.D. and Succession will find resonance in its workplace politics and ethical dread.
