## Synopsis

Wolverine (2011) is a Japanese anime superhero series created for ANIMAX, adapting the Marvel mutant Wolverine, also known as Logan. Produced by Madhouse, the single-season run contains twelve 24-minute episodes. Rikiya Koyama voices the title character, a mutant with animal-keen senses, three retracting bone claws on each hand, and a healing factor that lets him recover from nearly any wound. Fumiko Orikasa voices Mariko Yashida, and Hidekatsu Shibata voices Shingen Yashida, with the clan's politics and an arranged marriage driving much of the tension. The engine of the series is the lone outsider caught between rival factions, fighting through brutal close-quarters combat while trying to keep his own footing. Each episode is built from action set pieces interleaved with family intrigue. The tone is gritty and violent, with a serious, sometimes melodramatic register. Fans of X-Men: The Animated Series and Blade of the Immortal will find resonance in its mix of mutant heroics and samurai-tinged anime drama. The series was poorly received by audiences, with its single season ending without resolving its larger arc.
