## Synopsis

Emperatriz (2011) is a Mexican telenovela created by Hector Forero, José Ignacio Cabrujas and Mauricio Somuano for Azteca América. Gabriela Spanic stars as Emperatriz Jurado, a woman wrongly sent to prison who emerges determined to rebuild her life and settle scores with those who betrayed her. Bernie Paz plays Alejandro Miranda, the male lead caught in the emotional tangle, while Sergio Bustamante as Justo Del Real, Adriana Louvier as Esther Mendoza Del Real, Julieta Egurrola as Perfecta Jurado and Marimar Vega as Elisa Mendoza Del Real drive the rivalries, marriages and hidden family ties. The engine is classic telenovela machinery: a long chain of accusations, reversals, extramarital affairs and reunions, each episode pushing a new confrontation between the heroine and the family that wronged her. Produced as a single 155-episode run of roughly 45-minute episodes, the story unfolds as one continuous serialized arc from first episode to finale. The tone is heightened and melodramatic, mixing wounded pathos with a steady current of vengeance and glamour. Its contemporary Mexican setting gives the family feuds a modern business backdrop. Fans of La usurpadora, Rubí and Pasión de gavilanes will find the same appetite for sweeping suffering and comeuppance.
