## Synopsis

Monaco Franze (1983) is a German comedy-crime series created by Helmut Dietl for BR Fernsehen. Helmut Fischer plays the title detective, a charming and perpetually distracted investigator who chases suspects through Munich while trying to dodge the many women who pursue him. Ruth-Maria Kubitschek plays Annette von Soettingen, a sharp-tongued presence who complicates his love life, while Karl Obermayr plays Manfred Kopfeck, a sidekick whose loyalty and bumbling schemes add friction to each case. Thomas Gottschalk appears in a small role. The engine of the series is simple: a crime to solve collides with a steady stream of romantic misadventures, so each episode turns the act of detection into a comic chase across the city. Its single season of ten episodes, each about forty five minutes, gives it a self contained, episodic shape rather than a continuing mystery. The tone is wry, breezy and sardonic, with an affectionate eye for Munich's cafes, streets and social circles. Fans of Moonlighting and Remington Steele will find a similar pleasure in a glamorous, self-regarding detective whose romantic life keeps undercutting his casework.
